How prescription acne cream works
Breakouts start when pores clog with oil and dead skin and bacteria take hold. Prescription creams tackle each step, often combining a retinoid such as tretinoin with ingredients like clindamycin, niacinamide or azelaic acid.
Your provider looks at your skin photos and history, writes a formula for you and adjusts it as your skin responds.
Who it may be prescribed for
- Adults 18 and over with ongoing breakouts
- People whose acne has not cleared with over-the-counter products
- People who are not pregnant or trying to conceive

Important safety information
Prescription skin creams can cause dryness, peeling, redness and stinging, especially in the first few weeks, and make skin more sensitive to the sun, so use sunscreen every day. Tretinoin and hydroquinone are not used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Compounded medications are prepared by a state-licensed pharmacy for an individual patient. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed.
