What is hydroquinone?
Hydroquinone lightens dark patches by slowing the production of melanin, the pigment that colours skin. It is a go-to treatment for sun spots, melasma and marks left after breakouts.
Your provider may combine it with kojic acid and niacinamide, and will plan courses of a few months with breaks in between, to get results while keeping your skin healthy.
Who it may be prescribed for
- Adults with sun spots or age spots
- People with melasma or marks left after acne
- People who are not pregnant or breastfeeding

Important safety information
Prescription skin creams can cause dryness, peeling, redness and stinging, especially in the first few weeks, and make skin more sensitive to the sun, so use sunscreen every day. Tretinoin and hydroquinone are not used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Compounded medications are prepared by a state-licensed pharmacy for an individual patient. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. Long, unbroken use of hydroquinone can rarely darken skin, which is why it is used in courses.
