What is semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It acts like a hormone your gut releases after a meal: you feel full sooner, your stomach empties more slowly and your blood sugar stays steadier. Alongside changes to eating and activity, that can make losing weight feel far more manageable.
Your provider starts you on a low dose and raises it step by step, giving your body time to adjust. You keep in touch through the patient portal, so your plan can change as you do.
In the STEP 1 trial, adults taking brand-name semaglutide 2.4 mg once a week alongside lifestyle changes lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo.
Who it may be prescribed for
- Adults with a BMI of 30 or more
- Adults with a BMI of 27 or more and a weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure
- People ready to pair medication with changes to eating and activity

See all FAQsWhat are GLP-1 medications?
GLP-1 receptor agonists copy the action of GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after you eat. They help you feel satisfied with smaller portions, slow digestion and support healthy blood sugar levels.
How do I take semaglutide?
Once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day and with or without food. You inject it just under the skin of your stomach, thigh or upper arm, changing the spot each time. Your order comes with step-by-step instructions.
What if I miss a dose?
Follow the directions from your provider and on your pharmacy label, and never take two doses close together to catch up. If you are not sure what to do, message your provider in the patient portal first.
How should I store it?
In the refrigerator, between 36°F and 46°F, away from light and never frozen, unless your pharmacy label says otherwise.
I already take a GLP-1. Can I switch?
Yes. Tell us in your intake which medication you take, your current dose and the date of your last dose. Your provider will decide whether to continue at a similar dose or restart lower.
Is compounded semaglutide FDA-approved?
No. Compounded medications are prepared by a state-licensed pharmacy for an individual patient. They are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed.
